CHAPTER 16 Supernova

Woolver gritted his teeth as he followed Vondor-3 out of the Vunkotune Healing Center and into the heat of the corridors. Getting out of the Citadel was taking forever, as the planet’s gravity made them step slowly and heavily, just when they needed to pick up speed. Not only to mention that the temperature had risen drastically within the Citadel. “The air conditioning must be broken,” he gasped.

“It’s not the only thing that’s broken, Woolver,” Keshia wheezed.

Robots scurried left and right, never showing signs of panic, while the comms blared into their helmets. “Warning! Supernova in 108 local planetary minutes! Evacuation initiated.”

At one point, a slab crashed into the corridor before them, and they had to double back to take a longer way around. Woolver struggled to carry Trinket, who weighed twice more than usual, and Vondor-3 had to help Keshia, who was struggling to breathe under the strain of gravity.

“We have arrived,” Vondor-3 said finally. He opened a door, and they found themselves again on the platform leading to the IQURUS. It was a miracle that the thin strip of rock jutting from the Citadel hadn’t collapsed with all those earthquakes. The IQURUS’s vertical wings were still attached to the dirigible, which hovered overhead.

Woolver let out a low breath of relief. To his surprise, Stinge and Tulo were waiting for them.

“Where were you?” Stinge shrieked. “Get me out of here!”

A deep rumble almost shook them off the platform.

“Everyone, inside!” Woolver yelled. He passed Trinket to Tulo and the new prosthetic leg to Keshia.

Keshia told Woolver, “Start up those engines, Starpilot! I’ll be up as soon as I get Trin comfortable below.” She, Stinge, Tulo, and Trinket headed to the lower level while Woolver turned to close the door. But Vondor-3 was still standing outside the IQURUS. “What’s up, buddy?” he asked, pausing.

Vondor-3’s camera eyes zoomed around his head as if he were taking in the destructive scene of his planet. Then he focused on Woolver, and Woolver understood. “You’re staying, aren’t you?” His heart sank a little.

Vondor-3 didn’t reply right away. “Yes,” the robot said at last. “My people need help. Soon, they will be without their king. I can oversee the navigation systems of the Star Squadron, coordinate their quantum shift, and determine a safe location until we figure out what to do. The Interstellar Alliance will consider our use of the Star Squadron as a direct affront. They will say that we stole the Exostar and are using the Alliance fleet to defend it. They will likely set up an army to attack us. Even if we survive the supernova, my people still won’t be safe.”

Woolver had thought about this, as well. “I understand, Vondor-3. I will do my part. We will return the Exostar to Exhibitus and unveil the real thieves. You can count on me to tell the Alliance the truth: Vunkotune is innocent. The real culprits are the Remnants.”

“So be it,” Vondor-3 said. He shook Woolver’s hand with all four of his. “Safe travels, Starpilot.
